St. Andrews Cross
In 1385, the Scottish Parliament decreed that Scots should wear a white St. Andrew’s Cross to identify them. They also mentioned that if their jackets or coats are white, they should wear the cross on a black background so that it would stand out. Therefore, this buckle’s black background links back to this time period even more than a blue background would. Scotsmen first hoisted a Saltire flag with white cross and blue background, as we know it today, in 1512.Â
The fierce rampant lion is often considered the unofficial national flag. The Standard of the Earl of Douglas allegedly featured both a St. Andrew’s Cross and a Rampant Lion in 1388. This kilt pin featuring a Saltire is a perfect way to show your Scottish pride!
