What is a Great Kilt?
The Great Kilt (or féileadh mòr) is the classic, full-length historical Highland garment most people picture when they think of early Scottish dress.
- Traditionally made from double-width tartan fabric (about 54–60 inches wide).
- Consists of 4-8 yards of material, pleated by hand each time it’s worn.
**Choose optional Cheater Pleats for easy wear - The extra fabric above the belt can be draped over the shoulder, used as a hood, wrapped as a cloak, or even as a blanket.
- Provides warmth, protection, and a dramatic appearance, making it ideal for reenactments, Renaissance fairs, and traditional Highland events.
- Heavier and bulkier than an Ancient Kilt or Phillabeg, but with unmatched versatility.
How to measure for your Great Kilt:
- Measure the waist size at your actual waist, where you usually wear your pants.
- Measure from your waist to about the middle of the knee.
- Have someone help you. If you bend even a little while trying to do it yourself, the measurement will change.

Thank you for my Weir Ancient Color Great Kilt. The colors are fan fantastic. My research indicates that you did a near perfect match and I could not ask for better. I have Weir modern short formal kilt that I got for my daughter's wedding, her choice. Now have Argyl jacket and waistcoat. My great kilt from you will be the perfect completion of my kilts in addition to my Stumptown recreation Kilts. Your stick figure ling drawing of how to fold the great Kilt is nice but lacking. Have you considered making a youtube video? I have seen a couple, nice but too much history and melodrama. Could you make one that simply stays on task, with just enough very light music. Yours with blessings, Ralph
