What is a Great Kilt?
The Great Kilt (or féileadh mòr) is the classic, full-length Highland garment most people picture when they think of early Scottish dress. Traditionally made from double-width tartan (about 54–60 inches wide) and 4–8 yards of fabric, the kilt is pleated by hand each time it’s worn. The extra fabric above the belt can be draped over the shoulder, used as a hood, wrapped as a cloak, or even spread out as a blanket. Heavier and bulkier than an Ancient Kilt or Phillabeg, the Great Kilt provides unmatched warmth, versatility, and dramatic flair—ideal for reenactments, Highland gatherings, and Renaissance fairs.
Sizing Guide:
-
4 Yards: Fits up to a 34” waist
-
5 Yards: Fits up to a 44” waist
-
6 Yards: Fits up to a 54” waist
Tip: For deeper pleats and a fuller look, choose the next size up.
