What is Blackwood?

Genuine blackwood today is rare and expensive. African Blackwood was imported and used in Ancient Egypt thousands of years ago. It is a very hard, dense, and stable hardwood, prized for its use in making musical instruments (like bagpipes) and knife and sword handles. Blackwood is easy to confuse with ebony wood, but is technically in the Rosewood genus.

I was very pleased with the quality of this knife. It looks handsome, and is very, very sharp. The leather case is quite good. This is my second Faux Blackwood Sgian Dubh- I needed to replace my first one. Last year, I was hosting a clan tent at the local highland games, and got into a conversation with the host of the neighboring tent. He complained about the poor quality his sgian dubh, and showed it to me. It was just as awful as he described, and looked like a cheap toy. I showed him my Faux Blackwood Sgian Dubh, and offered him a friendship trade. He was delighted to accept. After the event, I looked up the price of his shoddy knife, and discovered that it cost twice what this one does. I would have been embarrassed to actually wear it myself, so I threw it away and ordered a second Faux Blackwood Sgian Dubh.

I was pleased that it was a gift with my order. I was expecting something cheap and ugly but the look and quality is very nice and is another part of my Celtic look that is well worth having.

(Full disclosure: For me, this item was offer as a gift with purchase of the Highland Boots, Code FBP01, which are great too, btw) This is an item I probably wouldn't have bought for myself, but it's a nice, sturdy, and good looking Sgian Dubh perfect for reenactors and just casual wear where carrying such blades are permitted. Alas the MD Renn Fest does not permit, but the MD Irish Festival in November does!

A good product for the money. The simulated "blackwood" handle is obvious plastic, and the top is a jade green that does not really come across in the picture. The back side is, however, slightly flat which helps it sit next to the leg in hose, and this is good. The blade and sheath are also both good.

For the price I was expecting the knife to be cheap and flimsy. I wouldn't call it excellent quality, but for the price the knife is a good buy.
