Great Kilt - Homespun Wool Blend Tartan

Capture the look and feel of historical Highland dress with our Homespun Wool Blend Great Kilt. Made from our unique homespun tartan—a 55/45 polyester and wool blend—this fabric is hand-woven on old-world looms to replicate the authentic look of kilts from centuries past. The looser weave and naturally rustic texture make it ideal for reenactments, Renaissance fairs, or anyone seeking a traditional, handmade appearance.

The yarn is worsted but not as tightly spun as modern tartans, resulting in a thicker, more rugged feel. Due to the hand-woven nature of the fabric, you can expect small snags, pulls, and other minor imperfections that give each kilt a one-of-a-kind, artisanal character.

Features:

  • Made from 55% polyester / 45% wool homespun tartan

  • Hand-woven on old-world looms for authentic historical texture

  • Woven 52–54 inches wide, approximately 12 oz. weight

  • Looser weave offers a thicker, rustic feel

  • Pleats easily by hand, but won't form sharp knife edges

  • Natural imperfections enhance its handmade, traditional look

  • Ideal for reenactments, Renaissance fairs, Highland games, and heritage events

Pleating instructions are included with each kilt. Traditionally, these kilts are pleated each time you wear them. We ask for size information to ensure that your kilt will fit you correctly, but we do not pleat the kilt for you unless you also select Cheater Pleats™ as an additional option.

Size Chart

4 Yards fits up to a 34” waist
5 Yards fits up to a 44” waist
6 Yards fits up to a 54” waist
8 Yards fits 54”+ waist
**For deeper pleats, choose the next size up

How to measure for your Greatkilt:

1) Measure the waist size at your actual waist, where you usually wear your pants.

2) Measure from your waist to about the middle of the knee.

Have someone help you. The measurement will change if you bend even a little while trying to do it yourself.

What is a Great Kilt?

The Great Kilt (or féileadh mòr) is the classic, full-length historical Highland garment most people picture when they think of early Scottish dress.

  • Traditionally made from double-width tartan fabric (about 54–60 inches wide).
  • Consists of 4-8 yards of material, pleated by hand each time it’s worn.
**Choose optional Cheater Pleats for easy wear
  • The extra fabric above the belt can be draped over the shoulder, used as a hood, wrapped as a cloak, or even as a blanket.
  • Provides warmth, protection, and a dramatic appearance, making it ideal for reenactments, Renaissance fairs, and traditional Highland events.
  • Heavier and bulkier than an Ancient Kilt or Phillabeg, but with unmatched versatility.
