How To Measure for Your Kilt
- Have someone help you. If you bend over even a bit, your measurement will not be correct.
- Most people prefer to wear their canvas kilts at the pants’ waist, like a pair of jeans. If this is what you choose, then measure comfortably around your waist where the top of your pants rest. If you prefer the traditional kilt waist, measure your waist size in inches at the navel (belly button).
- Measure around your hips (butt) at the fullest point (usually 6-8 inches below the waist).
- Measure from your waist (kilt waist or pants waist accordingly) to about the middle of the knee.

I had been looking at getting a utility kilt a few years ago, but at the time the options were solid canvas or Black Watch tartan. I already own a traditional kilt and a full belted plaid, both in Black Watch. When I checked this site again in June I saw they had a hybrid option. This was much more what I was looking for, so I placed an order for one in black canvas with Murray of Athol tartan. I wanted something that could be worn semi-formal or day-to-day, without being too flashy.
I’m very pleased with the finished product. The fit is exactly as I prefer. The pockets are large enough to hold everything I need, and if I want to get dressy my black leather sporran becomes an accessory rather than a necessity.
I ordered this from Canada on June 8 and it arrived on my doorstep on August 11. Very good turnover for a made-to-measure kilt.
